MALLAKA E TARRANUM - NOOR JEHAN

Aa ke wabasta hain uss husn ki yaadein tujh se!

A beautiful poem, penned by Faiz Ahmed Faiz & rendered by our Melody Queen, Madam Noor Jehan for `Tarannum' (1990). The best thing about this poem is that Madam had composed its tune herself, instantly after hearing it from Faiz Sahab. She had all the nuances of a good learner & listener. It is Faiz's second poem (after `Mujh Se Pehli Si Mohabbat') whose tune was composed by Madam Noor Jehan.

GHAZAL by FARAZ!!!

Tum takalluf ko bhi ikhlaas samajhate ho Faraz
Dost hota nahin har hath milane wala wala!

Ahmad Faraz  born Syed Ahmad Shah  on 12 January 1931 in Kohat, died 25 August 2008) was a Pakistani Urdu poet. He was acclaimed one of the modern Urdu poets of the last century. 'Faraz' is his pen name, (in Urdu takhalus). He died  in Islamabad on 25 August 2008. He was awarded Hilal-e-Imtiaz, Sitara-i-Imtiaz and after his death Hilal-e-Pakistan by the government.
Faraz was born in Kohat, then India to Syed Muhammad Shah Barq. His brother is Syed Masood Kausar. He moved to Peshawar with his family. He studied in famous Edwards College, Peshawar and received Masters in Urdu and Persian from Peshawar University.
During  college life, Faiz Ahmad Faiz and Ali Sardar Jafri were his best progressive poets, who impressed him and became his role models. Ethnically a Pashtun, Ahmed Faraz studied Persian and Urdu at the Peshawar University. He later became lecturer at the Peshawar University.
Faraz was arrested for writing poems that criticised military rulers in Pakistan during the Zia-ul-Haq era. Following that arrest he went into a self-imposed exile.[4] He stayed for 6 years in Britain, Canada and Europe before returning to Pakistan, where he was initially appointed Chairman Pakistan Academy of Letters and later chairperson of the Islamabad-based National Book Foundationfor several years. He has been awarded with numerous national and international awards. In 2006, he returned the Hilal-e-Imtiaz award he was given in 2004.[6]
He claimed his current writings and said: "I now only write when I am forced to from the inside."[ Maintaining a tradition established by his mentor, the revolutionary Faiz Ahmad Faiz, he wrote some of his best poetry during those days in exile. Famous amongst poetry of resistance has been "Mahasara". Faraz was also mentioned by actor Shahzada Ghaffar in the Pothwari/Mirpuri telefilm "Khai Aye O".
Faraz died of Kidney failure in local Islamabad hospital in 2008.

BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME!

MARIA POLYDOURI

BECAUSE YOU LOVED ME

I only sing because you loved me
in the past years.
And in sun, in summer's prediction
and in rain and snow,
I only sing because you loved me.

Only because you held me in your arms
one night and you kissed my lips,
only for this I'm beautiful as wide open lily
and I still have a shiver in my soul,
only because you held me in your arms.

Only because your eyes looked at me
with the soul in the glance,
proudly I dressed the supreme
crown of my existence,
only because your eyes looked at me.

Only because as I was passing you noticed me
and from your glance I saw to pass
my lissome shadow as a dream
to play, to suffer,
only because as I was passing you noticed me

Because you called me shyly
and you reached after my hand
and you had in your eyes the blurring
- a complete love,
because you called me shyly.

Because, only you liked it
that’s why my passing remained beautiful.
It was like you were following me where I was
as if you were passing somewhere close to me.
Because only you liked it.

I was born only because you loved me,
my life was given for this.
In the graceless, unfulfilled life
my life was fulfilled.
I was born only because you loved me.

Only for your unique love
dawn gave to my hands roses.
So that I light your way for a moment
night filled my eyes with stars,
only for your unique love.

Only because you loved me so well
I lived in order to increase
your dreams, beautiful man that you set
and thus sweetly I die
only because you loved me so well.
          *************

Maria Polydouri was a Greek poet who is known for her passionate poems which have a tinge of sadness and are imbued with desperate romanticism. She had an unsuccessful love episode with Kostas Karyotakis, her contemporary and an eminent poet. She died of consumption in an Athens sanatorium in 1930 at a young age of 28.

I dedicate this poem to my soul, my love...

BASANT PANCHMI!

'Aaj humare grah basant' -- beautiful Gurbani Shabad sung by Anandmurti Gurumaa describes the true way of celebrating Holi -- the festival of colours. This festival of colours is celebrated, by the people in the world, by sousing each other with colour and water. But a seeker celebrates this festival by doing 'simran' -- chanting the divine, the endless energy. He finds himself fortunate to celebrate holi with his best friend 'Parmatma' -- the super consciousness. He worships and does sewa for his Guru and being in his presence, he experiences the ultimate exhilaration.
